Good IPv6 News from Akamai State of the Internet Report

The Akamai State of the Internet Q1 2017 Report is now out. As a major content delivery network, Akamai is able to collate substantial amounts of data on many metrics including connection speeds, broadband adoption, IPv4 exhaustion, and IPv6 deployment. While there are many interesting statistics and trends throughout the report, we will of course focus on the IPv4 depletion and IPv6 deployment efforts.

Some key highlights:

  • Belgium remained the global leader in IPv6 adoption, with 38% of its connections to Akamai for dual-stacked content happening over IPv6.
  • Akamai is finding that lack of IPv6 support in some consumer electronics (such as smart TVs and stand-alone digital media player devices) is presenting a barrier to growth in adoption, especially as the amount of content consumed on these devices grows over time.
  • There was an overall 19% quarterly drop in IPv6 adoption; however, Akamai indicates this may be due in part to a seasonal effect, as fourth-quarter IPv6 numbers generally appear to spike somewhat in comparison to other quarters. The end-of-year holiday period may be a factor in this, as more people are accessing the Internet more frequently from residential (versus business) connections, and residential connections tend to have higher levels of IPv6 penetration, sometimes substantially so.
  • Cable and wireless/mobile providers drove the largest volumes of IPv6 requests, as many are leading the way for IPv6 adoption in their respective countries.

Overall, it’s continued good news for the upward projection of IPv6 deployment across the globe, but it’s clear there’s still much work to be done. Facebook, Akamai Pass Major Milestone: Over 50% IPv6 from US mobile networks

Wednesday was a major milestone for Facebook. For the first time, more people connected over IPv6 than IPv4 from the four major US mobile networks! Facebook’s Paul Saab wrote about this on (where else?) Facebook:

Today marks the first day that more people used IPv6 to access Facebook than IPv4 from the 4 major USA mobile networks. This is a huge milestone in just 4 short years since World IPv6 Launch in 2012.

Similarly, Erik Nygren at Akamai updated an earlier post last week with a similar view:

As an update as of August 10th, there has been significant growth over the past three months and deployment has crossed a major milestone: over half of requests to dual-stacked sites on Akamai from the top-4 US mobile networks now use IPv6! IPv6 is used around 70% of the time for Android and over 30% of the time for iPhones, up 10% each from May. We have also seen T-Mobile start to deploy IPv6 to iOS devices as well in a dual-stacked configuration.

Today over on the World IPv6 Launch blog, Mat Ford wrote that he is seeing this same milestone in the World IPv6 Launch measurements. The four major US mobile networks of Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile USA, Sprint Wireless and AT&T are seeing a combined measurement of close to 55% IPv6.  His chart:

Akamai State of the Internet

Akamai-Logo-RGBAkamai recently published its third quarterly report for 2015 on ‘The State of the Internet‘. As a major content delivery network provider, Akamai is able to collate substantial amounts of data on many metrics including connection speeds, network availability, traffic patterns, and IPv6 adoption.

Whilst the number of unique IPv4 addresses connecting to Akamai continues to increase, there’s substantial evidence this trend is starting to level off as available IPv4 addresses become more scarce. Indeed, the statistics for IPv4 show small declines in some countries like the US, Germany and India which suggests implementation of IPv4 conservation measures such as Carrier Grade NAT, or increased IPv6 adoption.

Belgium remains the country with the highest percentage (34%) of content requests made over IPv6, despite a 8.4% quarterly drop. Switzerland, the United States, Peru and Germany follow with between 17 and 20% traffic, although with the exception of Peru, all saw a decrease from the previous quarter. On the upside, Greece and Estonia saw a sizeable increases in their IPv6 traffic with 37% and 20% respectively.

Cable and mobile providers continue to push IPv6, particularly in the US (Comcast Cable, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Time Warner Cable), Belgium (TELENET), Peru (Telefonica del Peru), Switzerland (Swisscom), Germany (Deutsche Telekom and Kabel Deutschland) and Portugal (Sapo). BT has also announced plans to IPv6 enable 100% of its UK network by the end of 2016.

Finally, the report notes that ARIN exhausted its pool of IPv4 addresses in July 2015 and was forced to wait list thirteen requests until it received additional address space from IANA and recovered addresses from other organisations. Whilst the other Regional Internet Registries do still have address space remaining, the substantial transfer activity during the quarter suggests that organisations are increasingly concerned about the availability of address and were taking action to ensure continuity of their business.

Akamai Launches New IPv6 Trend Visualization Charts

Today the folks over at Akamai launched a new set of IPv6 statistics and trend visualization charts that help confirm the ongoing growth of IPv6 that we are seeing all around the world. Launched as part of Akamai’s “State of the Internet” (SOTI) Trends area, these new charts allow you to explore IPv6 deployment on a country or network basis.  As our colleague Phil Roberts writes today on our Internet Technology Matters blog:

This is a really nice tool that allows you to see what they see in terms of a view of IPv6 deployment by country and by network. Whereas the World IPv6 Launch measurements are an opt-in measurement for networks, Akamai publishes data from every network where they see IPv6 traffic, so they report some large deployments that we don’t have in our data. Kabel Deutschland is an example of a network with a large IPv6 deployment (35% of the traffic coming from their network to Akamai’s servers uses IPv6) that isn’t in our database.

The country trend charts are great to see and fall in line with numbers that we see out of similar statistics from Google, APNIC, Cisco and also Eric Vyncke.  Obviously with Akamai only recording this data starting from August 31, 2014, you don’t yet see the longer trend lines that some of the other sites can show, but it will be helpful to have these trend charts over the months and years ahead as IPv6 continues to grow. (I’d note that Akamai has been tracking overall IPv6 growth statistics for several years now, so you can see the overall trend chart.  Now they are displaying charts on a per-country and per-network basis.)

As Phil mentioned in his post, a great aspect of these charts is that they come from Akamai’s own data across the servers of their content distribution network (CDN) and so you gain a strong view into what networks are really sending IPv6 traffic.  If you click on the “Networks” tab on the right side of their page just above the names of the countries, you can start seeing the trend chart by network names. Interesting to note, too, Akamai’s message when you hover your cursor over the Networks tab:

Note that the Networks ranking is determined by the volume of IPv6 requests to Akamai.

This explains why Comcast Cable is listed first even though Verizon Wireless has a higher percentage of IPv6 requests.  Comcast’s networks have simply sent more requests in total to Akamai’s network than Verizon Wireless’ network has.   Akamai’s Network trend charts also line up nicely with the World IPv6 Launch measurements as Akamai has been one of the long-standing providers of data into that project (although, as Phil noted, only for networks that opted in to participating in the WIPv6L measurements).

We’re very pleased to have these new charts out there from Akamai – and look forward to continuing to watch them grow as IPv6 continues its global march toward full deployment!
