ISOC Establishes Jonathan B. Postel Service Award

December 1998

After the death of Jon Postel in October 1998, the Internet Society Board votes to establish a fund for an award to be given each year in his honor. The Jonathan B. Postel Service Award is presented annually—marked by a $20,000 cash prize and a presentation crystal—to an individual or organization that has made outstanding contributions in service to the data communications community, with particular emphasis on candidates who have supported and enabled others in addition to their own specific actions. In keeping with this description, in 1999 Jon Postel is the first to be recognized, posthumously, with the award that bears his name.
